I’ve been thinking about doing a juice cleanse for quite some time. However, every time I seriously contemplated it I remembered that I would have to stop eating for a given period of time and I don’t have a juicer.
Along came the 2013 festive season, followed by an incredibly indulgent weekend in Sydney and I reached the point where I was as ready as I was ever likely to be! Now what? A little bit of serendipity, combined with the power of social media and I discovered a brand new company called Inner Ego, cold pressing their own juices, complete with cleanse packs right here in Perth, Western Australia. When I initially saw them on Laura Moseley‘s Instagram account they hadn’t even officially launched yet!
You can check them out on Instagram too @inner_ego!
My 2 day cleanse pack was delivered on Sunday evening, mid-Moroccan feast by a friendly young lady, whose name I didn’t catch, with a big smile and lots of information about what to expect from the cleanse. Excitement and passion for their product evident in her bubbly demeanour. PLUS IT CAME WITH CUTE PAPER STRAWS!
The cleanse involved a total of eight juices each day. I planned a road trip to Katanning for work on the Monday, thinking if I was starving out of my mind I would be far, far away from the fridge and the pantry! I needn’t have bothered though, at no point during the day was I hungry. In fact, totally the opposite! The juices aren’t like the crap you can buy in supermarkets. They are thick, they almost coat your mouth with freshness! You can’t skull them, you need to take your time and enjoy them.
I don’t drink a lot of juice normally so this may not be news to regular juicing people but it was something I found kind of incredible. Layers of flavours! You can actually taste each individual fruit or vegetable and it’s as if they come in stages. For example, “#4” – Beetroot, Pineapple, Lemon, Celery and Carrot – a real mind bender because it looks like you’re drinking beetroot, which obviously you are, but the first thing you taste is the pineapple, and pineapple is yellow, not purple-red. Being a very creative, colour oriented person as well as being a foodie – this really spun me out! Plus, I had a lot of time in the car to think about it. Also, carrot always comes last!
How stunning are the colours of these juices? Brings a whole new meaning to ‘taste the rainbow’, doesn’t it?
Day one, I managed to get through only six of the juices. There was one I didn’t like the taste of, mainly because I am not a huge fan of grapefruit, so purely a personal thing! I also didn’t drink the last one because I was just too full!! I later realised this was a big mistake because “#8” tastes AMAZING!
Day two; I woke up feeling pretty virtuous! I was being good to my body again, fueling it with all these incredible nutrients, detoxing and getting rid of all the junk and chocolate I have abused it with over the past few weeks. My dedication to living a healthy, active, nutritious lifestyle renewed and reinvigorated. I really want to stress to anyone reading this and considering a juice cleanse – I was not at all hungry throughout the two days. I admit, I wanted to eat though; more for the action of eating, for chewing and feeling something textural in my mouth. All I wanted was a cucumber stick! A fresh sugar snap pea! But I stuck to my guns of seeing this cleanse through and I restrained myself, though it felt very foreign telling myself not to eat fresh vegetables…
Breakfast: Day 2 “#1”
Tuesdays are my biggest gym day of the week – I usually do a CXworks class and a Body Combat class back to back. I was really interested to see how, being on the tail end of the cleanse, I would feel throughout my workout. Lethargic and lacking in energy or bouncing off the walls with energy to spare? It was a great workout, not sure whether I had extra energy but it certainly had no negative effects!
I had already scheduled to attend a raw chocolate cooking class on Tuesday night – held by Tamara Brown of Raw Reset – which was a fantastic, informative and enjoyable evening spent with great company in Jenna from Cleanse your Life, Cass @changing_inside_and_out and of course, Tamara! I was incredibly restrained all evening and saved my taste testers for the following day and really enjoyed my last jar of the cleanse “#8” – Almond, Cacao, Date, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, filtered water and sea salt – basically, chocolate milk for dinner – guilt free! Don’t mind if I do!
The following morning I felt incredible! Invincible! Motivated to treat my body with the love and respect it deserves. I’m so glad that I finally did this. I would absolutely recommend Inner Ego to anybody thinking of trying out a cleanse and it is definitely something I am seriously considering doing every few weeks, even if it just one day a week!
Added bonus – 16 new jars to fill with exciting goodies to put in the pantry! Time to stock up on superfoods!
